FACT CHECK: Has The RNC Raised Twice As Much Money As The DNC?

Former Obama White House Communications Director Jen Psaki claimed the DNC has “raised half as much money as the RNC” Sunday on CNN’s “State Of The Union.”

“On the Democratic side, we’re doing some things that are problematic,” Psaki explained.

Verdict: True

While the Republican National Committee (RNC) has so far raised over $100 million in 2017, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) has raised less than half of that, at slightly more than $50 million.

Fact Check:

Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings indicate that the RNC has raised just under $104.1 million between January and September of 2017.

On the other hand, FEC filings show that the DNC has raised $51.1 million between January and September of 2017 – 49.1 percent or about “half as much” as the RNC has raised, as Psaki correctly claimed.

The RNC’s fundraising success this year has in large part been driven by small donations and support for President Donald Trump. The Washington Post reports that as of August, the RNC raised $40.3 million from smaller contributions under $200.

“The Republican Party continues to thrive because of steady support from the American people,” RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said in a September statement.

Conversely, WaPo reports that the DNC has only raised $25.1 million from contributions under $200 as of August.

RNC coffers have also been boosted by the Trump Make America Great Again Committee which shares a quarter of its funds raised with the RNC, WaPo reports. FEC filings indicate that the fundraising committee has raised $19.2 million in the first nine months of 2017.

The DNC’s woeful finances has been an issue stretching back to the Obama presidency, as former DNC Chair Donna Brazile makes note of in an excerpt of her book about the 2016 presidential election. Politico reports that the DNC also fired its lead fundraiser last Thursday, although it is still unclear how the move will affect the DNC’s “problematic” fundraising.
