FACT CHECK: Did World Leaders Pose In Front Of ‘Demonic’ Paintings In Spain?

A post shared on Facebook purportedly shows world leaders visiting a “demonic exposition” of art at Madrid’s Prado Museum while in Spain for a summit.

The images included in the post are digitally fabricated. The demonic artwork was photoshopped into pictures of world leaders examining classical paintings.

Fact Check:

President Joe Biden and other heads of state assembled for the 2022 NATO Summit in Madrid, Spain, from June 28 to 30. A post shared on Facebook claims that while the leaders were in Madrid, they visited the Prado Museum, where they posed in front of demonic-looking artwork.

The post includes five photos showing leaders such as British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron standing before different macabre art pieces.

While it is true the group visited the museum for dinner on June 29, according to artnet.com, each image featured in the Facebook post has been altered to include the morbid works. An unedited version of the first image, showing Macron, was published by El Mundo and shows the French president pictured in front of classical paintings. An unaltered version of the other image featuring Macron was shared by La Cardena SER and likewise shows him with traditional artwork.

The unedited photo of Trudeau was shared by El País and shows the Canadian prime minister standing in the foreground with a group of paintings behind him, none of which resemble the grisly paintings included in the Facebook post. Meanwhile, La Cadena SER and El Mundo each shared the unedited image of Johnson, which shows the British prime minister examining three different classical paintings. An unedited version of the group photo was shared by El País and likewise shows no demonic-looking paintings.
