A video shared on Facebook purportedly shows President Joe Biden turning his back to his audience and addressing an invisible figure during a recent speech in Ireland.

Verdict: Misleading

The video is lacking context. Images and videos capturing other angles of the venue show there were people in balconies above Biden, who he was addressing.

Fact Check:

Biden recently visited Northern Ireland 25 years after the Good Friday Agreement, an accord that ending three decades of bloodshed, according to USA Today. Biden gave a speech in Belfast to commemorate the occasion, reminding the audience that peace cannot be taken for granted, BBC reported.

A Facebook post claims to show a video of Biden speaking to an invisible figure during a speech. The video opens with Biden facing a crowd off-camera before turning around to speak to something behind him.

“And I want all of you to know, especially the young people in the audience today,” Biden says before turning his back to the podium and looking upwards. “Don’t jump, okay? Oh, I didn’t see you all the way up there. As my father would say, please excuse my back.”

The footage is missing context, however. The clip used in the post can be seen in a YouTube video at around the 21:19 timestamp. As the camera pans out, a balcony can been seen above where Biden was just speaking at 38:57.

Other images of the event feature the balconies above Biden and show those he was addressing. A broadcast of the event from the White House shows these balconies, and the patrons, in full view. (RELATED: Did Joe Biden’s Vehicle Display An Italian Flag During A Visit To Ireland?)
