FACT CHECK: Is Christopher Wray Facing Jail Time Following A Trap Set By Ron Johnson?

Christine Sellers | Fact Check Reporter

A video shared on Facebook purports Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Christopher Wray is allegedly facing jail time following a trap set by Wisconsin Republican Sen. Ron Johnson.

Verdict: False

The video’s caption is inaccurate. The original video shows a November 2022 Senate Homeland Security Hearing on National Security Threats, and Johnson neither sets a trap for Wray nor threatens him with jail time.

Fact Check:

Kentucky Republican Rep. James Comer said he plans to hold Wray in contempt of Congress, according to The Washington Post. Wray is accused of not turning over a document that purportedly provides information on an alleged criminal scheme involving then-Vice President Joe Biden and a foreign national, CNN reported.

“Watch Wray SMACKED DOWN After Ron Johnson EXPERTLY Trap Him With ‘Hunter Set-up’… Faces JAIL Time,” the Facebook video’s caption purports. The video has received over 1,000 likes at the time of publication.

The claim is false as the video’s caption is inaccurate. The original video shows a November 2022 Senate Homeland Security Hearing on National Security Threats.

During the hearing, Johnson questions Wray about an alleged scheme put in place to downplay potentially criminal information on President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden. Specifically, Johnson references a letter signed by 51 whistleblowers who claimed the younger Biden’s purported laptop was “Russian disinformation.” Johnson labels the move as “election interference.”

At no point does the Republican Wisconsin Senator set a trap for Wray or threaten him with alleged jail time.

Likewise, the claim made in the Facebook video’s caption is neither referenced on Johnson’s website nor on his verified social media accounts. The FBI also has not publicly addressed the purported claim. (RELATED: Did Ron Johnson Hit Hunter Biden With Jail Time?)
