FACT CHECK: Did A Witness Cry To Josh Hawley For ‘No Jail Time’ During A Hearing?

Christine Sellers | Fact Check Reporter

A video shared on Facebook purports a witness cried to Missouri Republican Sen. Josh Hawley for “no jail time” during a hearing.

Verdict: False

The video’s caption is inaccurate. The video clip stems from an October 2021 Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing on the Independence of Inspectors General. There is no mention of the Inspectors General being corrupt, and the witness does not cry to Hawley for “no jail time.”

Fact Check:

Hawley and Ohio Republican Sen. J.D. Vance were set to introduce a bill Wednesday aimed at preventing future “accounting errors” at the Department of Defense (DOD) following a recent mishap involving military equipment for Ukraine, according to Fox News. The error resulted in DOD allowing the U.S. to send another $6.2 billion in aid to the country, Axios reported.

“‘THE IG IS CORRUPT’ Garland’s witness CRIES to Josh Hawley for ‘no JAILTIME’ after shows ‘witchhunt,'” the Facebook video’s caption reads. The video has received over 500 likes at the time of publication.

The claim is false, as the video’s caption is inaccurate. The video clip stems from an October 2021 Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing on the Independence of Inspectors General. The full hearing is available to watch on C-SPAN.

In the clip of the hearing shared via the Facebook post, Hawley questions Allison Lerner, the Inspector General of the National Science Foundation and Chair of the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency. Hawley asks Lerner about an independent investigation that discovered alleged misconduct among Office of Inspector General (OIG) officials.

There is no mention of the Inspectors General being corrupt, and Lerner does not cry to Hawley for “no jail time.” (RELATED: Did Josh Hawley Allegedly Threaten A Biden Aide With Jail Time?)

Likewise, Check Your Fact found no credible news reports supporting the claim. In addition, the claim is neither referenced on Hawley’s website nor on his verified social media accounts. The OIG also has not publicly released a statement addressing the claim.

Check Your Fact has contacted Hawley’s office for comment and will update this piece accordingly if one is received.
