A photo shared on Twitter allegedly shows Microsoft founder Bill Gates strapped down to a gurney after being arrested by federal marshals.

Verdict: False

The image is digitally altered. There is no evidence that Gates has been arrested.

Fact Check:

Gates has recently stated that he believes artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT are the most important advancement in technology since the personal computer, according to CNBC. Gates also stated risks associated with AI such as spreading spreading misinformation and and displacing jobs are “manageable,” CNN reported.

The Twitter post purports Bill Gates has been arrested by federal marshals. The image appears to show Gates in a blue robe and strapped down to a gurney after being arrested.

“Bill Gates Arrested by US Federal Marshals,” the tweet reads. “Being Held Under Armed Watch at Guantanamo Bay; Charged With War Crimes Against Humanity. Washington Post.”

The photo is digitally altered, however. Check Your Fact found no credible news reports about Gates being arrested. Likewise, there are no results on The Washington Post website showing articles about Gates’ alleged arrest. (RELATED: No, Bill Gates Did Not Endorse Ron DeSantis For President)

The image appears to be edited from the 8:13 timestamp of a YouTube video showing a recreation of someone receiving a lethal injection. It shows a different man strapped to the gurney, not Gates. “A painstaking reconstruction of a real-time execution by lethal injection that highlights some of the very specific issues relating to the USA’s preferred execution method,” the caption reads.
