FACT CHECK: Is A Liverpool Bank Being Refurbished To House Asylum Seekers?

An image shared on Facebook claims a bank in Kirkby, Liverpool is being refurbished to house asylum seekers.

Verdict: False

There is no evidence for this claim. A listing for the building shows that it is currently available to let and is being advertised as an office building.

Fact Check:

Immigrant rights groups have stated that President Joe Biden’s move to limit the number of asylum seekers at the U.S.-Mexico is illegal, according to USA Today. Illegal border crossings have dipped to their lowest level in two years since Biden took office, Politico reported.

A Facebook post claims a building in Liverpool is being refurbished into an accommodation for asylum seekers. The post shares photo of the building with construction scaffolding.

“Kirkby Town Centre,” the text reads in part. “The old Barclays Bank offices by the bus terminus is being converted to house upto 2000 asylum seekers … Workers on the site have been told it’s to house vulnerable people and to not tell locals anything about the project.”

This claim is baseless, however. Check Your Fact found no credible news reports to corroborate the claim.

The Knowsley Council in the U.K. released a statement saying that although the building is being refurbished, there are no plans to turn it into an asylum seeker accommodation. The statement also said that the building is available to let and is being promoted as an office. (FACT CHECK: Are Only Male Migrants Trying To Enter The U.S?)
