FACT CHECK: Video Of Vladimir Putin Snubbing Emmanuel Macron Is Edited

A video shared on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, claims to show Russian President Vladimir Putin snubbing French President Emmanuel Macron.

Verdict: Misleading

The video has been edited to remove Macron shaking hands with Putin in 2018.

Fact Check:

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy said that Europe “needs” Russia and criticized Europe’s Ukrainian policy, according to Politico EU. The former French president said that Europe needs to compromise with Russia, the outlet reported.

The video claims to show Putin snubbing Macron and implies that the incident happened recently. The video’s caption reads, “Breaking: 🇷🇺 Putin SNUBS Macron’s handshake in front of his wife and other world leaders.”

This, however, is misleading. The video shows Putin shaking hands with Macron. The video was also taken in November 2018 and shows world leaders meeting for the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. The video’s title reads, “Centenary of the 1918 Armistice: Arrival of Vladimir Putin at the Arc de Triomphe.”

Around Emmanuel Macron, nearly 70 heads of state or government will commemorate the end of the First World War. They will be welcomed this morning at the Élysée before joining the Arc de Triomphe,” reads the description. This is not the first time social media users have shared misinformation online. Check Your Fact recently debunked a claim the Wagner Group assassinated the Russian Defense Minister.
