Fact Check:

The Reddit post claims that a man was assaulted at Union Station’s food court. The post claims that the man was taken to the hospital, where he was treated, and he also filed a report.

“The police told him to call an ambulance and we have been at the hospital for the last 7 hours to address multiple fractures to his face and likely skull. The police have made no effort whatsoever to follow up about a violent attack in a public transit hub at 11am on a Sunday,” the post says.

The claim about a violent assault at Union Station appears to be true. Amtrak spokesperson Kimberly Woods confirmed that “Amtrak police is investigating a report of an assault on Sept. 17 at Washington Union Station.” The spokesperson later told Check Your Fact that Amtrak Police “were summoned to the lower-level food court of Washington Union Station for a report of an assault.”

“At approximately 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Amtrak Police Officers were summoned to the lower-level food court of Washington Union Station for a report of an assault. The victim suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The Amtrak Police Department is working with law enforcement partners to identify and apprehend a suspect who fled the scene,” Woods said.

The man who was attacked spoke with Fox 5 the next day. He declined to show his face or his name “out of fear for retaliation” and has fractures on his face, cheek and under his eye, according to Fox 5. “I’m feeling in pain, first of all, because of the assault. I’m feeling a little helpless from the lack of support I felt I had,” the man said to Fox 5.

Violent crime is rising in Washington D.C., with homicides and carjackings fueling the rise, according to ABC News. Check Your Fact previously looked into D.C.’s rising violent crime rate in July 2023.
