FACT CHECK: White House Spokesman Claims Hunter Biden Lived With His Father In 2019

White House spokesman Ian Sams claimed in a Sept. 27 tweet that Hunter Biden was living with his father, President Joe Biden, when he allegedly received wire transfers from China in summer 2019.

Imagine them arguing that, if someone stayed at their parents’ house during the pandemic, listed it as their permanent address for work, and got a paycheck, the parents somehow also worked for the employer

Verdict: False

Hunter Biden was living in California in summer 2019, per court records and his memoir. The alleged wire transfers were sent in July and August 2019, according to the House Oversight Committee. Sams later said the tweet was “an analogy.”

Fact Check:

The House Oversight Committee said Sept. 26 that it obtained bank records that showed Joe Biden’s Wilmington, Delaware, address was listed on wire transfers from Chinese businessmen to Hunter Biden in 2019, according to CNN.

Sams responded to a tweet stating Hunter Biden lived in Wilmington, Delaware, in 2019 (when the alleged wire transfers occurred) and tweeted, “Imagine them arguing that, if someone stayed at their parents’ house during the pandemic, listed it as their permanent address for work, and got a paycheck, the parents somehow also worked for the employer[.]It’s bananas[.] Yet this is what extreme House Republicans have sunken to.”

The tweet, though, appears to be wrong on where Hunter Biden was living at the time of the wire transfers and when the pandemic was. The younger Biden was living in California at the time of the wire transfers, not Delaware, according to a proposed guilty plea agreement from July 2023.

“After numerous programs and trips to rehab, Biden got sober in May 2019, the same month he married his current wife. Biden remained in California and spent much of Summer 2019 painting and developing his memoir,” reads the proposed guilty plea agreement. Hunter Biden moved to Los Angeles in early 2018, according to a 2019 New Yorker profile, with the intention of “completely disappearing.” He also said in his memoir he was living in California in summer 2019, the New York Post reported. CNN reported that the wire transfers allegedly happened in July and August 2019, the same time he was reportedly living in the state.

Furthermore, the tweet mentions the pandemic. The World Health Organization declared that COVID-19 could be classified as a pandemic on March 11, 2020, according to the global health agency’s COVID-19 timeline. The first confirmed case in the U.S. was in January 2020, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. All of this occurred after the alleged wire transfers occurred.

Sams told Check Your Fact in an email that we “are deliberately misrepresenting the facts and don’t seem to understand what analogies are…” (RELATED: Joe Biden Embellishes Fire Story In Recent Remarks In Hawaii)

“It is ironic your outlet is called ‘check your fact’ dot com, when you are deliberately misrepresenting the facts and don’t seem to understand what analogies are – I responded to your outlet here,” Sams said, linking to a tweet responding to Daily Caller investigative reporter James Lynch, saying that he and the Daily Caller were “intentionally deceiving people about the role of the address.” (Disclaimer: The Daily Caller is Check Your Fact’s sister publication. They are editorially independent of each other.)

“What’s dishonest is you, your rightwing disinformation outfit, and its GOP pals intentionally deceiving people about the role of the address. Hunter listing his parents’ as his only permanent address during this period of turmoil in his life has long been known. Have a good one,” Sams said.

A House Oversight Committee spokesperson told Check Your Fact in an email that “Ian Sams is lying again.”

“In his attempt to defend the president’s abuse of public office for his family’s financial gain, Ian Sams is lying again. Sams attempts to compare Hunter Biden receiving payments from Chinese nationals to his father’s residence – while he was running for President of the United States – to everyday American workers receiving pandemic aid. That analogy doesn’t work,” the spokesperson said. “Not only did Hunter Biden receive the payments in 2019 prior to the pandemic, but he wasn’t even living at his parents’ house when the Chinese associates sent payments to Joe Biden’s address according to his own memoir and sweetheart plea deal.”
