A video shared on X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter, purports the Spanish Military recently returned 15000000 refugees back to Morocco.

Verdict: False

The video is not recent and shows the Spanish Military trying to push back Moroccan migrants who illegally entered Ceuta, Spain in 2021. A spokesperson for the Ministerio de Defensa de Espana denied the claim’s validity in an email to Check Your Fact.

Fact Check:

Senegal’s navy recently intercepted four boats carrying 600 people, according to an Oct. 1 article from BBC News. The boats were attempting to cross into the Canary Islands, the outlet indicated.

“This is an invasion,” the X video, viewed over 900,000 times, purports. Text overlay on the video claims the Spanish Military has returned 15000000 refugees back to Morocco. In the video, Spanish military vehicles can be seen deploying to a nearby beach where the migrants have congregated.

The video is not recent, however. The video shows the Spanish Military trying to push back Moroccan migrants who illegally entered Ceuta, Spain in 2021.

The first clip, which shows the Spanish Military deploying tanks to the nearby beach, stems from a video published on YouTube by the AFP on May 18, 2021. Likewise, a clip showing the migrants on the beach in Ceuta stems from a Reuters report published one day earlier on May 17, 2021. The Reuters report indicates about 5,000 migrants, including minors, illegally swam to Ceuta. One person also died as a result of attempting to cross into the country, according to the outlet.

In addition, the last clip featured in the X video that shows the migrants in the water can be traced back to the Indonesian website, “Antara News.” Reuters is named in the caption, which suggests it may be the original source of the video.
