A viral video shared on X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter, purports to show Hamas sympathizers taking over the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol and calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Verdict: False

The protestors entered the rotunda of the Cannon House Office Building, a spokesperson for the U.S. Capitol Police told Check Your Fact in an email.

Fact Check:

President Joe Biden visited Israel Wednesday amid the country’s current conflict with Hamas, The Associated Press reported. Biden offered support ahead of plans to ask Congress for more than $2 billion in additional aid to both Israel and Ukraine, according to the outlet.

“BREAKING: Hamas sympathizers have completely taken over the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol calling for a ‘CEASEFIRE’ in Gaza,” the X video’s caption purports. In the video, viewed over one million times, a large crowd of people can be seen protesting inside what appears to be the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol.

The video does not show a protest inside the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol, however. The video, originally shared to X by Townhall.com Managing Editor Spencer Brown, indicates it was filmed inside the rotunda of the Cannon House Office Building.

“The scene in the Cannon House Office Building rotunda on Capitol Hill as Hamas sympathizers chant under a banner calling for a ‘CEASEFIRE.’ Of note, demonstrations are not allowed in congressional buildings, per Capitol Police,” Brown captioned the video.

Likewise, the columns visible in the rotunda featured in the video match those of images of the Cannon House Office Building, as seen on both Google and Getty Images. (RELATED: Did The IDF Arabic Facebook Page Say Israel Bombed The Gaza Hospital?)

In addition, NBC4 Washington reported on the recent Israel-Hamas ceasefire rally that occurred in Washington, D.C., noting that nearly 300 people were arrested for entering the Cannon House Office Building.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Capitol Police confirmed the protestors entered the rotunda of the Cannon House Office Building in an email to Check Your Fact.

“The protesters legally entered the building through our screening checkpoints and then started demonstrating inside the Cannon Rotunda [of the Cannon House Office Building]. Demonstrations inside Congressional Buildings are illegal, so 305 people were arrested. Three of those were arrested for Assault on a Police Officer,” the spokesperson said.

“We knew the group was going to be coming and so both the House and Senate Sergeant at Arms Officers sent out communications to Members and staff the day before to let them know,” the spokesperson added.
