Verdict: False

The video is altered. In the original video, which was shared on YouTube, Clinton discusses climate change and deaths due to extreme heat at the United Nations’ (UN) recent COP28 climate summit in Dubai.

Fact Check:

Clinton said “we need to rethink the insurance industry” during a panel session at the COP28 climate summit, highlighting how lower-income countries and workers often struggle to access insurance, according to Reuters. In addition, Clinton said everyone, not just lower-income workers, will eventually be affected by climate change and will struggle to obtain insurance, the outlet reported.

“I lost the 2016 election because of climate change,” Clinton appears to say in the Instagram video, which has received over 30,000 likes. “Even Jeffrey Epstein died because of climate change,” she later seems to add.

The video is altered, however. Check Your Fact reviewed the video, and its audio does not match Clinton’s lip movements, immediately drawing its authenticity into question. Likewise, Check Your Fact found no credible news reports suggesting Clinton ever made remarks blaming her 2016 election loss and Epstein’s death on climate change.

Searches of the Clinton Foundation website and the former Secretary of State’s verified social media accounts also do not generate the purported remarks. (RELATED: No, Hillary Clinton Did Not Refer To Climate Change As Her ‘Hitman’)

In the original video, which was shared on YouTube, Clinton discusses climate change and deaths due to extreme heat at the UN’s recent COP28 climate summit in Dubai. Clinton’s remarks begin around the video’s 48:05-minute mark.

“We are seeing and beginning to pay attention and to count and record the deaths that are related to climate and by far the biggest killer is extreme heat,” Clinton says in the video.

“I mean, even in Europe last summer, which has the ability to count and figure out what happened, they recorded 61,000 deaths because of the heat in Europe. We don’t have that kind of number yet from Africa, Asia, Latin America, but we know and estimate that we probably could, uh, measure about 500,000 deaths, and the majority of those are women and girls, and particularly, pregnant women,” Clinton continued.

At no point in the video does Clinton make the purported remark blaming her 2016 election loss or Epstein’s death on climate change.

Check Your Fact has contacted Clinton’s press office for comment and will update this piece accordingly if one is received.
