FACT CHECK: Facebook Video Of Modified Tractor Falsely Linked To Farmers’ Protest In India

A video shared on Facebook purports to show a modified tractor used at the “Delhi Chalo” farmers’ protest in India.

Verdict: False

The video was originally shared on Instagram on Feb. 1 by the Turkish outlet Ortakoy Haberim. It is not linked to the “Delhi Chalo” protest in any way, according to India Today.

Fact Check:

Farmers in India are protesting for fairer conditions and higher minimum crop prices, according to Deutsche Welle. Farmers in India previously protested in both 2020 and 2021, the outlet reported.

The Facebook video purports to show a modified tractor used at the “Delhi Chalo” farmers’ protest in India. “The so-called farmers making unrealistic demands from the GoI seem fully prepared, as if gearing up for a war against the state,” the video’s caption reads.

“These purportedly poor farmers can afford to modify their tractors but also demand pensions and other stuff from the GoI. It’s evident that this protest against the Modi government is politically motivated,” it continues.

The claim is false, however, as the video was originally shared on Instagram on Feb. 1 by the Turkish outlet Ortakoy Haberim. According to its caption, the Instagram video shows a “Duplex Cabin Tractor.”

Another iteration of the video was also shared on the platform a day earlier on Jan. 31 by social media user @cengizler_tarim_55. The user’s profile is public and they describe themselves as an “Agricultural Service.”

Likewise, Check Your Fact did not find the video referenced in any credible news reports about the recent “Delhi Chalo” farmers’ protest in India. In fact, the opposite is true. India Today also traced the tractor video back to the Instagram post shared by Ortakoy Haberim and indicated it was not linked to the recent protest in any way.

Additionally, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has neither commented on the video via his website nor his verified social media accounts. Furthermore, India’s Ministry of External Affairs has not publicly addressed the video. (RELATED: No, A U.S. General Was Not Killed In Gaza)

Check Your Fact has contacted India’s Ministry of External Affairs for comment and will update this piece accordingly if one is received.
