FACT CHECK: No, This Video Does Not Show A Palestinian Girl Sleeping In Street During Israel-Hamas War

A video shared on X allegedly shows a Palestinian child sleeping on the street in the midst of the Israel-Hamas war.

Verdict: False

The video is miscpationed. It was posted in July 2023, predating the Israel-Hamas war.

Fact Check:

Israel has stated that it will launch an assault on Rafah, the last area of relative safety in Gaza, if Hamas does not release hostages by the beginning of Ramadan in about three weeks, according to The Guardian. The entire European Union, except for Hungary, warned Israel not to attack Rafah as Ireland’s foreign minister said it would be “absolutely catastrophic,” Reuters reported.

An X video set to somber music shows a small girl wearing read who appears to have fallen asleep on the ground while sitting up, her mouth agape. The person filming lightly taps her on the cheek and forehead, then shakes her shoulder until she opens her eyes.

“Rafah today,” the caption reads. Text overlaid on the video reads, “Palestinian orphans adopted lonely.” The video also includes Turkish text which reads, once translated, “children should sleep at home.”

The video is miscaptioned, however. The post dates back to at least May 2023 when it was posted on Instagram, predating the current Israel-Hamas war. The war began on Oct. 7, 2023 when Hamas launched an attack on Israel from the Gaza strip, resulting in over 1,200 deaths, according to Britannica

The original post does not provide any context for what the video actually shows. It does not, however, show the overlaid text seen in the X video. Its caption reads, “Dear mother.” (RELATED: No, This Pro-Palestine Sign Does Not Defend Hamas Attack)
