FACT CHECK: Facebook Image Showing Yulia Navalny Hugging Evgeny Chichvarkin Is Altered

A screenshot of a tweet shared on Facebook purports to show Yulia Navalny, wife of the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, hugging her “new boyfriend.”

Verdict: False

The image is digitally altered. The original image, which appears in a 2013 VOA News article, shows Navalny hugging her late husband, Alexei. In the digitally altered version of the image shared on Facebook, Alexei Navalny has been removed and replaced with Russian businessman Evgeny Chichvarkin.

Fact Check:

Russian authorities have handed over the remains of the late Alexei Navalny to his mother, according to The Wall Street Journal. Navalny’s funeral is scheduled to take place on Mar. 1., Forbes reported.

“Navalny turning in his grave right now,” the text portion of the tweet reads in part. “His wife and her new boyfriend sending condolences,” it continues. Included with the text is a photo of Yulia Navalny appearing to hug an identified male. The original tweet featuring the image has garnered nearly 291,000 views as of writing.

The image is digitally altered, however. The original image, which appears in a 2013 VOA News article, shows Navalny hugging her late husband, Alexei. The article highlights the fact that Alexei Navalny was released from jail on bail after he was allegedly sentenced to a five-year term on embezzlement charges.

In the digitally altered version of the image shared on Facebook, Alexei Navalny has been removed and replaced with Russian businessman Chichvarkin. The original image of Chichvarkin can be traced back to the website hakkon.club.

Likewise, Check Your Fact did not find the image referenced in any recent credible news reports about Yulia or Alexei Navalny. In fact, the opposite is true. Reuters also indicated the image is digitally altered in a Feb. 29 article. Additionally, Chichvarkin has not publicly referenced the digitally altered image on his verified Instagram account. Alexei Navalny died in jail after he reportedly fell and became unconscious, Reuters reported on Feb. 16. Russian President Vladimir Putin has been accused of having Navalny killed, the outlet also reported.

Navalny reportedly died on the eve of a supposed prisoner swap, according to Politico.
