A post shared on social media purports that New York Democrat Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) received $142,000 in student loan forgiveness.

Verdict: False

The claim stems from a satirical account.

Fact Check:

Ocasio-Cortez responded to the recent Supreme Court ruling on former President Donald Trump’s immunity with a post on X saying she will file articles of impeachment when she returns to congress, Fox News reported. Two other Democrats have responded negatively to the news, both suggesting that something must be done, according to MSNBC.

A post shared on Facebook alleges that Ocasio-Cortez was a recipient of a student debt forgiveness. One iteration of the claim shows the politician wide-eyed with her eyebrows raised, while another shows her in makeup and smiling for the camera.

The text on the image reads, “AOC Received $142K in Student Loan Forgiveness – ‘I deserve it for serving my country.'”

The claim is inaccurate. The claim stems from a satirical post from an account called America – Love It Or Leave It. The account’s bio features a disclaimer that self identifies as satire. The account is part of the Satirical news outlet called America’s Last Line Of Defense.

The website features a disclaimer that identifies the site as parody, “Dunning-Kruger-Times.com is a subsidiary of the ‘America’s Last Line of Defense’ network of parody, satire, and tomfoolery.” (RELATED: No, Audio Does Not Show Keir Starmer Disparaging Liverpool)

AOC discussed her student loans when she made a payment during a House Financial Services Committee meeting and told the committee that her balance was $20,237.16, according to USA Today.

This is not the first time misinformation about Ocasio-Cortez has been shared online. Check Your Fact recently debunked a claim that she stated that all her socialist friends are millionaires.
