A viral video shared on X claims Texas Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee’s death is linked to oversight of a shooting that occurred at 2024 Republican nominee and former President Donald Trump’s July 13 campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Verdict: False

On July 19, NBC News reported Jackson Lee died at the age of 74 following a battle with pancreatic cancer. There is no evidence suggesting her death was linked to oversight of the shooting that occurred at Trump’s campaign rally.

Fact Check:

Jackson Lee will be remembered via a series of events in Houston beginning on July 29, according to local outlet ABC 13. Jackson Lee will lie in state at the Houston City Hall rotunda on July 29, ABC 13 reported.

The X video, viewed over 12 million times, claims Jackson Lee’s death is linked to oversight of a shooting that occurred at Trump’s July 13 campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The video features former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle offering her condolences on Jackson Lee’s death while testifying before the House Oversight and Accountability Committee during a recent hearing on the shooting.

“BREAKING: Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle confirmed that Rep. Shiela Jackson was involved in the Oversight of the Secret Service. Rep. Jackson passed away 6 days after the assassination attempt on Donald Trump. This is one of the strangest coincidences of the year,” the post’s caption reads.

The claim is false. While both video and a transcript of Cheatle’s testimony show that she offered her condolences at Jackson Lee’s death, the former Secret Service Director never blames Jackson Lee for oversight linked to the shooting.

Likewise, Jackson Lee denounced the shooting via a statement shared to her website.

“The violence that occurred today during a political rally is deeply disturbing and goes counter to everything the United States represents as the world’s oldest democracy. Political violence has no place in the United States. This incident should be a catalyst for renewing our commitment to not allow violence to infect the political life of our nation. My prayers are with the families who have been severely impacted by today’s unfortunate events. I ask for calm as authorities investigate this incident,” her statement read in part.
