Verdict: False

The claim is baseless. Biden’s wife died in a car crash in Delaware while Biden was in Washington, D.C., according to a New York Post article from the time.

Fact Check:

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi claimed Biden “belongs” on Mount Rushmore, according to Newsweek. Her comments on the matter have upset many supporters of former President Donald Trump, which triggered criticism of Biden.

An Instagram post claims Biden killed his wife. The post shows two men behind a desk speaking to the camera.

“Yall know Biden killed his first wife and blamed it on a drunk driver and the man hadn’t even been drinking and the police reports have been lost,” the caption reads in part.

The post is accompanied by a seemingly unrelated Newsweek broadcast that was shared to X on July 18, claiming that Biden would drop out of the race and not endorse Vice President Kamala Harris.

The claim that Biden killed his wife is baseless, however. Biden’s first wife, Nealia Biden, was killed in a car crash along with their infant daughter on Dec. 18, 1972 in Hockessin, according to a New York Times article. President Joe Biden could not have been involved in any way because he was in Washington, D.C. at the time, the outlet reported.

The accompanying Newsmax video, posted on July 18, is genuine, but it was wrong that Biden would not endorse Harris. On July 21, Biden made an X post announcing that he was dropping out of the race and endorsing Harris.

“Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year,” he wrote, in part. “Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump.” (RELATED: X Post Falsely Claims Man Is Suing Biden Over ‘Let’s Go Brandon’ Merch)
