The claim originated as satire. No reputable sources have reported on this claim.

Fact Check:

A post shared on Threads claims that the NFL issued a ban on “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” The caption reads, “The NFL has issued a permanent ban on playing the ‘Black National Anthem’ at its games, declaring, ‘There’s only one National Anthem.'”

The claim is false. There are no reputable sources that have reported on this claim. ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing’ was performed ahead of the first game of the 2024 NFL season. (RELATED: No, the NFL has not Replaced The National Anthem with ‘The Black National Anthem’)

The claim seems to have emerged as satire. Check Your Fact located a post made on Facebook with the same claim. The post’s caption reads, “The NFL has issued a permanent ban on playing the ‘Black national anthem’ at its games, declaring, “There’s only one National Anthem.”- Satire.”

The Facebook post’s image also indicates that the claim is satire. The image contains text that reads, “rated satire” and “Nothing on this page is real if you believe anything we post then you’re potato crop.” The Facebook page’s intro reads,”We post SATIRE, nothing on this page is real.”

The NFL first allowed “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” also known as the “Black National Anthem” to be performed before games in 2020. In 2021, the NFL allowed the anthem to be played ahead of Super Bowl LV.
