FACT CHECK: Did Alejandro Mayorkas Discuss Heritage When Asked About Helene Recovery?
A post shared on social media purportedly shows that Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas discussed his family’s heritage in response to Hurricane Helene recovery question.
Verdict: False
The video is edited to include different audio.
Fact Check:
As recovery work is underway for those affected by Hurricane Helene, President Donald Trump has started his own fundraising effort to support those in need, USA Today reported. The campaign made a GoFundMe fundraiser that has raised more than $2 million and recieved a large donation from a fellow Republican, Sen. Kelly Leoffler, according to the outlet.
The post shared on Facebook purportedly shows Mayorkas responded to a question asked in an MSNBC interview by explaining his heritage. In the video, the interviewer appears to Mayorkas about the preparation and recovery efforts after the damage from Hurricane Helene to which Mayorkas responds by describing his family’s history of survival during the Holocaust.
“The Mayor of Canton, North Carolina, expressed his concern about the cellular service being down across the region to the Director of Homeland Security, Anthony Mayorkas,” the caption reads. “Once again, Mayorkas deflected the blame by invoking the holocaust. How much longer are we going to let this go on!?”
The claim is inaccurate. There is no credible news report that suggests that this response is authentic. The video appears to have been digitally altered to show Mayorkas discussing his family’s heritage.
The original video, uploaded by MSNBC, shows Mayorkas giving a different answer on the subject of Helene recovery efforts. Mayorkas expressed his understanding of the frustration people feel in the wake of the hurricane. (Fact Check: Did Former President Bush Take A Photo As He Flew Over The World Trade Center On 9/11?)
The audio of Mayorkas in the post was taken from a senate hearing when Mayorkas was responding to the comments made by Josh Hawley, which can be seen in a video uploaded by Forbes.
This is not the first time misinformation about Hurricane Helene has circulated online. Check Your Fact recently debunked a claim that video of dogs leading cattle to safety was a result of the recent storm.
