Verdict: False
The claim is false. Walz and Emhoff visited the Otro Cafe during a recent trip to Arizona, and their bill was “paid by phone,” according to Lead Stories, which spoke to the cafe manager.
Fact Check:
Emhoff will visit Savannah, Georgia on Oct. 17 in support of the Harris-Walz campaign, according to local news outlet WTOC 11. Emhoff will also visit Yuma, Arizona on Oct. 19, KYMA reported.
The X video claims Walz and Emhoff purportedly did not pay for their orders during a recent stop at a cafe.
“When President Trump visits a restaurant, he pays for everyone. When Tim Walz and Doug Emhoff visit a coffee shop, they expect it to be on the house. That’s how you know the Democrat message is resonating with the working class,” the video’s caption reads.
The video shows Walz and Emhoff inside the cafe receiving their orders. The men then appear to leave without paying for their food and drinks.
The claim is false. A keyword search generates the original video shared by AZCentral.com and indicates the pair visited the Otro Cafe during a recent trip to Arizona. While the men walk away from the counter after receiving their orders, Walz’s daughter Hope informs the cafe staff that “someone will be up to pay,” followed by “He’s coming.” (RELATED: Walz Claims Trump Is ‘Asking For A Nationwide Abortion Ban’)
Likewise, Check Your Fact found no credible news reports suggesting Walz and Emhoff did not pay for their orders. Actually, the opposite is true. On Oct. 14, Lead Stories debunked the claim. The outlet indicated that it spoke with Otro Cafe Manager Yolanda Lopez by phone and she said Walz and Emhoff’s bill was “paid by phone.” Lopez was working the day Walz and Emhoff visited the establishment, also according to the outlet.
In addition, neither Walz nor Emhoff have publicly commented on the claim. The claim also does not appear on 2024 Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign website.
