The image is miscaptioned. It was originally posted to Flickr in 2007.
Fact Check:
Target stock is underperforming, dropping by 15% since the company’s Q3 report, according to Forbes. As Walmart’s share price continues to rise, Target’s has fallen by 50% after it peaked in October 2021, the outlet reported.
An X post claims to show the line for a Target on Black Friday. The photo appears to show a long line of shoppers outside of a Target at night.
“SO MANY PEOPLE OUTSIDE MY TARGET,” the Nov. 28 post reads. “Get a job it’s only 10pm.”
The photo is miscaptioned, however. Inputting the image into TinEye shows that it was posted as early as Nov. 23, 2007 on Flickr. It also appears in a 2016 Business Insider article, which credits it to that same Flickr account. (RELATED: Viral X Video Does Not Show Black Friday Shoppers)
Black Friday this year saw less crowds inside of stores, online shopping saw 10% more than it did during Black Friday in 2023, according to NPR. Consumers spent $11.3 million per minute between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and 69% of purchases came from mobile devices, the outlet reported.
This is not the first time misinformation involving Target has spread online. Check Your Fact previously debunked a claim that the company was shutting down its stores located in red states while opening more in blue states.
