FACT CHECK: No, This Video Does Not Show People Looting During Los Angeles Wildfires

A video shared on X allegedly shows people looting homes affected by the wildfires in Los Angeles, California.

Verdict: False

The video is miscaptioned. It actually shows people helping evacuate the house before it was reached by the fire.

Fact Check:

At least 24 people died in fires that have spread across Los Angeles over the past week, according to AP News. The fires have destroyed more than 12,000 structures with AccuWeather estimating that the damage and economic losses are around $250 to $275 billion, the outlet reported.

An X video purports the show people looting during the devastation. The video shows someone carrying a large sack while a fire burns in the background. The footage then goes to someone’s front door in which people are seen carrying out a TV together.

“Oh, look, Kamala Harris voters looting the homes of fire victims in California!” the caption reads. “Inhumane monsters!”

This video is miscaptioned, however. KTLA 5, a news station based in Los Angeles, interviewed the homeowner, who can be seen around the 4:46:05 timestamp in a YouTube video. The woman said some friends helped evacuate the house before the fire reached it.

The appearance of the front of the house, along with its number 161, is the same in both videos. Check Your Fact could not independently verify the origin of the video posted to X. (RELATED: No, The Hollywood Sign Is Not Currently On Fire)

Check Your Fact reached out to a KTLA spokesperson for comment.
