FACT CHECK: Did ICE Offer $750 To People Reporting Illegal Immigrants?
A post shared on Facebook claims Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is offering $750 to people who report illegal immigrants.
Verdict: Misleading
There is no evidence for this claim.
Fact Check:
Tom Homan, the Trump administration’s border czar, said that 308 illegal migrants were arrested during President Donald Trump’s first day in office, according to the New York Post.
Social media users are claiming that ICE is offering $750 per illegal immigrant turned in. One user wrote,” DEVELOPING: ICE is allegedly offering $750 per illegal immigrant that you turn in through their tip form. You can call the ICE hotline at 866-DHS-2-ICE (866-347-2423) LET’S GET MONEY.”
There is no evidence for this claim. If ICE was offering $750 per tip that leads to an illegal immigrant being arrested, media outlets would have covered it, yet none have. A wider internet search also did not yield any results for this claim. (RELATED: Did Pope Francis Say That Jesus Was Born During A Census Taken By King David?)
ICE has not released any public statements indicating it was offering $750. ICE does have a tip page, stating, “Although there is absolutely no guarantee that tip information provided will result in monetary payments, ICE has the discretion and statutory authorization to pay for information and/or evidence that is used in support of criminal investigations.”
An ICE spokesperson told Check Your Fact that “ICE does not offer rewards for tips in support of civil immigration enforcement objectives.”
