FACT CHECK: Is The FDA Banning Cosmic Brownies?

A post shared on Facebook claims the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is purportedly banning Cosmic Brownies.

Verdict: False

The claim is false. The FDA is banning red dye No. 3, not Cosmic Brownies, according to VERIFY.

Fact Check:

The FDA recently approved Journavx, a non-opioid painkiller that treats “moderate to severe acute, or short-term, pain in adults,” according to NBC News. The move could reduce the amount of opioids patients are prescribed after surgery, the outlet reported.

The Facebook post claims the FDA is purportedly banning Cosmic Brownies. “[The] FDA banning Cosmic brownies was not on my bingo card wtfff,” the post, which does not provide a source to support its claim, reads.

The claim is false. The FDA does not appear to have issued a press release or a social media statement supporting the post’s claim about a purported ban on Cosmic Brownies. Likewise, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., President Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), has not publicly commented on the claim. Little Debbie, the bakery that produces Cosmic Brownies, has not referenced the claim, either.

In addition, Check Your Fact found no credible news reports to support the claim. Actually, the opposite is true. On Jan. 27, Verify This debunked the claim. According to the outlet, the FDA is banning red dye No. 3, which the product contains.

Mike Gloekler, McKee Foods Communications & Public Relations manager, told VERIFY the FDA is not banning Cosmic Brownies.

“The FDA is not banning Cosmic Brownies,” Gloekler said. McKee Foods owns Little Debbie and distributes Cosmic Brownies, the outlet indicated.

VERIFY also reported that the claim might have originated via a parody account. (RELATED: Did Trump Sign An Executive Order Ending Food Stamps And Cash Assistance?)

Check Your Fact has contacted the FDA for comment.
