A Facebook video with over 1 million views claims Biden announced he would be expanding Medicare to include dental care. The post features a clip of a speech from the president alongside a video simulation of a dental operation.

There is no evidence that Biden made such an announcement. A search of the White House website turned up no results regarding any announcements about an expansion of Medicare to include dental work. There is likewise no mention of such a plan on the CMS website or the Medicare website.

The clip of Biden featured in the post, in which he says in part, “So here’s the bottom line. My plan lowers healthcare costs, gets us universal coverage quickly, when Americans desperately need it, now,” is from a June 2020 stop he made in Lancaster, Pennsylvania while campaigning for the presidency. While Biden discussed health care issues in the speech, he made no mention of dental care, according to transcripts available online. His entire remarks are available on C-SPAN.

The CMS website explains that by law Medicare only covers dental procedures that are “an integral part either of a covered procedure (e.g., reconstruction of the jaw following accidental injury), or for extractions done in preparation for radiation treatment for neoplastic diseases involving the jaw.”

Other dental services, including routine checkups, cleanings, fillings, dentures and tooth extractions, are not typically covered, according to Medicare Interactive, a website dedicated to helping people navigate Medicare. The website notes that certain Medicare Advantage Plans, plans that are purchased through Medicare-approved private companies, do offer routine dental services.
