FACT CHECK: Does This Footage Show Rioting On The West Coast In 2022?

A video shared on Facebook purportedly shows rioting occurring on the U.S. West Coast in 2022.

Verdict: False

The footage shows an incident that occurred in Cleveland, Ohio in 2020, not a recent riot on the West Coast.

Fact Check:

The Facebook video shows protesters destroying storefronts and looting products inside. “*What wonderful sight to behold* !! Protests, vandalism and looting rage across the west coast of US on 31/5 and 1/6/22 but not reported by CNN & BBC,” the post’s caption claims.

The footage was not taken recently. Rather, the video was shared on Twitter in June 2020 in response to a tweet from columnist Ahmed Baba about the Trump Administration’s response to protests related to the death of George Floyd that year.

Similar videos of the protests in Cleveland were shared by News 5 Cleveland through its verified YouTube account. (RELATED: Image Claims George Floyd’s Death Was Filmed Before The Coronavirus Pandemic)

The pictured buildings can be seen in a Google Maps street view of East 4th Street in Cleveland, Ohio. Protests turned violent during a May 2020 demonstration regarding Floyd’s death, prompting a curfew to be enacted for the Central Business District, according to Cleveland NBC affiliate WKYC.

There are no credible news reports suggesting that any protests of such a magnitude have occurred recently in any West Coast city.

This is not the first time footage or images of protests from the has been used to push false claims online. Check Your Fact previously debunked a fabricated image shared in June 2020 that allegedly showed the Lincoln Memorial after it was defaced by protesters.
