FACT CHECK: Did Chip Roy Call Jerry Nadler ‘F***ing Clueless’?
A video shared on Facebook claims Republican Texas Rep. Chip Roy called Democratic New York Rep. Jerry Nadler “f***ing clueless.”
Verdict: False
The video does not show Roy making such comments. A spokesman for Roy denied the claim.
Fact Check:
Roy recently weighed in on the Inflation Reduction Act, calling it a “radical tax and spending bill,” according to ABC affiliate KVUE. The congressman also commented on Republican Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney’s primary loss, stating voters “didn’t want more of the swamp,” Fox News reported.
Now, a 14-minute Facebook video viewed over 4,000 times claims he called Nadler “f***ing clueless” during a recent session of Congress. (RELATED: Did Kevin McCarthy Say That Nancy Pelosi ‘Should Be Jalied And Prosecuted’?)
“You’re F— Clu€Less” 𝐅𝐞𝐝 𝐔𝐩 Chip Roy 𝐁𝐑𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐈𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐋𝐘 𝐄𝐧𝐝𝐬 Nadler 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐫 with 𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝,” reads the post’s caption and title.
The post’s caption is baseless. The video contains a clip of Roy discussing government spending on the House floor, mainly airing concerns about student debt cancellation and arguing that the subsidization of student loans is responsible for the rising cost of higher education. At no point does he reference Nadler or call anyone “clueless.”
No such mention of the remark appears on Roy’s verified social media accounts or on Nadler’s verified social media accounts. In addition, neither Nadler or Roy have issued any press releases about the alleged comment.
“Congressman Roy has never used that phrase to describe Chairman Nadler — at least not publicly,” Nate Madden, a spokesperson for Roy, told Check Your Fact via email.
This is not the first time Roy has been falsely accused of insulting Nadler. Check Your Fact recently debunked the claim that Roy called Nadler “dumb.”
