FACT CHECK: Is Secretary Mayorkas Facing A Prison Sentence?

A video shared on Facebook claims Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is facing a prison sentence after Republican Louisiana Sen. John Kennedy “uncovered” new evidence from Hunter Biden’s laptop.

Verdict: False

There is no evidence that Kennedy revealed evidence that implicated Mayorkas or any other secretary.

Fact Check:

Kennedy penned an op-ed for DefenseNews Aug. 19, calling on congress to establish a special envoy to the Pacific Islands to “curb China’s ambitions.” Mayorkas recently shut down the controversial Disinformation Governance Board following the resignation of its director and Republican backlash, NBC reported.

The Facebook video, viewed over 10,000 times, claims Kennedy “uncovered” new evidence from Hunter Biden’s laptop that would indict the Homeland Security secretary.

“𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲! Mayorkas To 𝐉𝐚𝐢𝐥 As Sen. Kennedy 𝐔𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬 ɴᴇⱳ Evidence Related To ʜᴜптᴇг 𝐁𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧’𝐒 Laptop,” the video’s caption reads. (RELATED: Did Ted Cruz Say He Had Evidence About The FBI’s Search Of Mar-A-Lago?)

The caption is baseless. Neither Kennedy nor Mayorkas have mentioned any such documents on their verified Twitter accounts or other social media profiles. The Louisiana senator has likewise not issued any press releases regarding the alleged evidence.

The video is also irrelevant to the caption. The first clip stems from a Senate hearing showing Kennedy questioning Mayorkas on the controversial hiring of Nina Jankowicz to head the Disinformation Governance Board.

The second video is a press conference showing Kennedy criticizing President Joe Biden, accusing him of “mismanaging” Congress, COVID, the border and inflation among other important topics and policy areas.

This is not the first time Kennedy has been the subject of false claims on social media. Check Your Facts recently debunked a claim that the senator had evidence that implicated Rep. Adam Schiff.
