FACT CHECK: Video Claims Ukrainian Brigade Destroyed Thousands Of Russian Troops In Kherson

A video shared on Facebook claims the Ukrainian 95th Air Assault Brigade destroyed thousands of Russian troops in the Kherson region of Ukraine.

Verdict: Misleading

The 95th Air Assault Brigade was deployed in Kharkiv, not Kherson. It was part of the successful campaign to liberate Izyum in early September.

Fact Check:

Russian missiles hit critical infrastructure in Ukraine, including power and water infrastructure, according to Reuters. Ukraine is also conducting an offensive on Russian-occupied territory, which is expected to last through the winter, The New York Times reported.

The Facebook video, viewed more than 60,000 times, claims that the 95th surrounded and “destroyed thousands” of troops in Kherson. “BRUTAL ATTACK (Oct 04) Ukraine 95th Brigade distroy Thousands Russian troops while deploy to Kherson,” the post’s caption reads.

There is no evidence that the 95th has been involved in the Kherson offensive. The Long War Journal reported that the 95th was involved in the Kharkiv offensive that liberated Izyum in early to mid-September. Furthermore, open-source intelligence (OSINT) accounts have shown that the 95th is somewhere in Eastern Ukraine in late September and early October, around the time of the Facebook post’s claim.

OSINTechnical tweeted Sept. 30 a video of the 95th destroying a tank with an anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) in the Kharkiv region. (RELATED: Did The Ukrainian Navy Destroy 13 Russian Warships In One Strike?)

A video shared by UA Weapons Tracker shows the 95th destroying a tank in Eastern Ukraine, though does not specify which region.

“Another tank was destroyed by the Ukrainian 95th Air Assault Brigade somewhere in the East, possibly after an ATGM strike,” the tweet reads.

Misinformation about the Russian-Ukrainian conflict is not new. Check Your Fact recently debunked a claim that millions of Russian citizens were planning to revolt.
