FACT CHECK: Did Elise Stefanik Laugh At Liz Cheney During A Hearing?
A video shared on Facebook purports New York Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik laughed at Wyoming Republican Rep. Liz Cheney during a hearing.
The video’s caption is inaccurate. The 11-minute video shows a June 2022 press conference held by House Republicans, including Stefanik. At no point does Stefanik mention or laugh at Cheney.
Stefanik campaigned Thursday for New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin ahead of the Nov. 8 midterm elections, Politico reported. Stefanik also blamed Democratic New York incumbent Gov. Kathy Hochul for the “crime crisis” in the state during a Friday appearance on “America’s Newsroom,” according to Fox News.
The Facebook video, viewed 29,000 times, purports Stefanik laughed at Cheney during a hearing. “‘It Is A 𝐒𝐇𝐀𝐌’ Stefanik 𝐖𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐊𝐒 𝐇𝐀𝐕𝐎𝐂 On Pelosi’s 𝐑𝐈𝐃𝐈𝐂𝐔𝐋𝐎𝐔𝐒 Hearing Laughs At Liz Cheney,” the video’s caption reads.
The caption is inaccurate. There are no credible news reports suggesting Stefanik has ever laughed at Cheney during a hearing. Likewise, neither Stefanik nor Cheney have publicly addressed the purported claim via their verified social media accounts or respective websites.
The video is also irrelevant to the caption. The 11-minute video shows a June 2022 press conference held by Stefanik and fellow House Republicans Jim Banks and Steve Scalise. The trio of Republicans discuss how their Democratic colleagues allegedly care more about the Jan. 6 hearings than their own policies, which they claim are having negative impacts on Americans.
Cheney does not appear in the video, and while Stefanik labels the Jan. 6 hearings a “sham,” she neither mentions the Wyoming representative nor laughs at her. (RELATED: Did Elise Stefanik Flip Off The Camera After Marie Yovanovitch’s Testimony?)
