A post shared on Facebook purports Twitter CEO Elon Musk encouraged users to vote Republican in the 2022 midterm elections over taxes and other issues.

Verdict: False

The tweet is digitally fabricated. While Musk did encourage “independent-minded” voters to consider a Republican congress, the wording used in the post is not accurate.

Fact Check:

Musk reportedly told Twitter employees that the company is in danger of bankruptcy during a recent meeting, according to Yahoo Finance. Musk has touted that his purchase saw active user numbers surge to record highs, Insider reported.

The Facebook post purports Musk encouraged Twitter users not to vote for Democrats during the 2022 midterm elections. (RELATED: Did Elon Musk Copy A Donald Trump Tweet About Activists?)

“One of the most important things to keep in mind when you walk into a voting booth today is that Democrats want to legalize marijuana, raise taxes on billionaires, and strengthen socialist policies like Medicare and Social Security. Don’t let them get away with it, vote GOP,” the tweet reads.

The tweet is digitally fabricated. An advanced Twitter search reveals the comments attributed to Musk do not appear on his verified account. There are no credible news reports suggesting Musk made the remark.

However, the Twitter CEO did advise that “independent-minded voters” elect Republican candidates ahead of the 2022 midterms.

“Shared power curbs the worst excesses of both parties, therefore I recommend voting for a Republican Congress, given that the Presidency is Democratic,” Musk wrote.

Check Your Fact has contacted Musk for comment and will update this piece accordingly if one is received.

This is not the first time a false claim has been made about Musk. Check Your Fact previously debunked a claim that Musk planned to implement a verification system for Jewish Twitter users.
