FACT CHECK: Was Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel Hanged At Guantanamo Bay?
A post shared on Facebook purports Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel was hanged by the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps at Guantanamo Bay Nov. 18.
Verdict: False
The claim stems from an article published on a satirical website. A Navy JAG spokesperson told Check Your Fact the claim was incorrect.
Fact Check:
Moderna’s Omicron-specific COVID-19 booster produced a better immune response than its two original vaccines designed to combat the virus, Fox News reported. The pharmaceutical company conducted a study of its updated booster on almost 511 people, ages 19 to 89, according to CNN.
The Facebook post claims Bancel was hanged at Guantanamo Bay by Navy JAG on Nov. 18, 2022. Bancel faced execution because Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine caused injuries and deaths.
The claim is false. There are no credible news reports suggesting Bancel was hanged by Navy JAG at Guantanamo Bay on Nov. 18. The claim neither appears on Navy JAG’s website nor its verified social media accounts. Likewise, Moderna has not publicly commented on the purported claim.
“This is misinformation,” Navy JAG spokesperson Patricia Babb said of the claim in an email to Check Your Fact. (RELATED: Did The U.S. Military Raid A Moderna Warehouse?)
A keyword search reveals the claim stems from a Nov. 18 article published on the website “Real Raw News.” A disclaimer included on the website’s “About Us” page indicates it contains “humor, parody, and satire.”
The latest claim about the Moderna CEO follows a Nov. 15 article from the website claiming Bancel had been convicted of murder by Navy JAG after 32 service members allegedly died after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.
Check Your Fact has also contacted a Moderna spokesperson for comment and will update this piece accordingly if one is received.
