FACT CHECK: Has A Military Civil War Begun?
A post shared on Facebook purports a civil war has broken out among the U.S. military after a mission aimed at intercepting weapons bound for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
The claim stems from a satirical website. There is no evidence to support the purported claim.
General David H. Berger said the COVID-19 vaccine mandate is hurting recruitment efforts for the U.S. Marine Corps, Fox News reported. Berger cited falsehoods about the vaccine as having a negative impact on recruitment, according to Military.com.
The Facebook post purports a “military civil war” broke out after Berger led a recent mission to intercept weapons headed for the IRS. The post further claims the Marines who carried out the mission were ambushed by six U.S. Army soldiers when they approached the vehicle.
The claim is false. There are no credible news reports suggesting a military civil war has recently broken out or that U.S. Marines were ambushed by members of the U.S. Army during a mission. Likewise, neither the Marines nor the Army has mentioned the claim on their respective websites or verified social media pages. In addition, Berger has not publicly commented on the claim.
A keyword search reveals the claim stems from a Dec. 6 article published by the website, “Real Raw News.” A disclaimer included on the site’s “About Us” page indicates it contains “humor, parody, and satire.” (RELATED: Are Military Leaders Divided Over Their Support For Donald Trump And Ron DeSantis?)
Check Your Fact has contacted U.S. Marines and Army spokespersons for comment and will update this piece accordingly if one is received.
This is not the first time a satirical claim has circulated online. Check Your Fact previously debunked a social media post purporting Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona was arrested on charges of treason and child endangerment on Thanksgiving Day 2022 by U.S. Marines.
