FACT CHECK: Did Elon Musk Buy Truth Social From Donald Trump?

A video shared on Facebook purports Twitter CEO, Elon Musk, purchased former President Donald Trump’s social media platform Truth Social.

Verdict: False

The claim is baseless. There is no evidence that this purchase took place or that Musk is planning to buy any other social media companies.

Fact Check:

Musk has recently announced that he will resign from CEO of Twitter when he finds a suitable replacement, with reports suggesting he is considering his former PayPal partner Joe Lonsdale, Fox Business reported. Musk has also lost approximately $200 billion in net worth since November 2021, according to CNN.

The Facebook video, viewed over 20,000 times, claims Musk has made another purchase of a social media platform, highlighting the Twitter CEO’s promise to further freedom of speech. “BREAKING NEWS!” the caption reads. “Elon Musk JUST BOUGHT Trump’s Truth Social!” (RELATED: Did Elon Musk Post This Tweet About Banning Reporters?)

This claim is baseless. There is no credible new report that suggests that Musk has made this purchase of Truth Social. The 9-minute video offers no evidence that this deal has been made. Likewise, Trump has made no press releases announcing any such business deal, neither has Musk on his verified Twitter account.

Musk has tweeted about Truth Social in the past, claiming Truth Social only exists because “Twitter censored free speech,” something he committed to changing when he acquired the platform.

This is not the first time misinformation about prominent figures has circulated online. Check Your Fact recently debunked a claim Meghan Markle poked Princess Charlotte in the eyes at Queen Elizabeth’s funeral.
