FACT CHECK: Video Claims To Show A Russian Nuclear Submarine In Hawaii

A video shared on Facebook claims to show a Russian nuclear submarine surfacing on a beach in Hawaii.

Verdict: False

The video is from Hawaii Five-O, a television show. There is no evidence any Russian nuclear submarine is present or has been detected near Hawaii.

Fact Check:

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently oversaw the commission of several new Russian naval vessels, including the Generalissimus Suvorov nuclear submarine, according to The Associated Press. The new submarine is reportedly the sixth of its new class to join the country’s navy, the outlet reported.

The Facebook video, which has over 1.4 million views, claims a Russian nuclear submarine was seen in Hawaii. The video’s caption reads, “Russia’s most advanced nuclear submarine is suddenly floating in the Hawaiian Sea.”

There is, however, no evidence of a Russian submarine near Hawaii. If a Russian nuclear submarine had been spotted near Hawaii, media outlets would have covered it, yet none have. The U.S. Indo-Pacific Command did not release any statements about a Russian submarine near Hawaii. (RELATED: Did Ukraine Sentence A Man To 15 Years In Prison For Displaying A Russian Flag?)

Through a reverse image search, Check Your Fact found that the video is from the television show Hawaii Five-0. Part of the video was shared on YouTube. The episode was aired in 2018 and featured a Russian submarine that surfaced near Hawaii due to a mutiny, according to the Hawaii Five-O fandom website.

Russia did have a naval vessel near Hawaii in May 2022, according to Newsweek. Russia previously sent vessels to international waters outside of Hawaii in May 2021 and July 2021, the outlet reported.

Misinformation around the Russian-Ukrainian conflict is not new. Check Your Fact recently debunked a video claiming that 80,000 Ukrainian troops were besieging Russian soldiers in the Donetsk region.
