A post shared on Facebook claims that President Joe Biden’s administration is seeking to ban the use of gas stoves. 

Verdict: False

Spokespeople for the White House and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) confirmed that there are no such plans for a ban.

Fact Check: 

U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commissioner Richard Trumka Jr. proposed the possibility of the agency enacting a ban on gas stoves, claiming an alleged link to childhood asthma, according to CNN. opponents argued that the research behind this is based on a study not  done on children, but rather using meta-data, The Hill reports.

A Facebook post claims the Biden administration plans to ban gas stoves. “Biden’s next confiscation could be our GAS stoves,” the post reads. “He should focus on pretending to be president and leave us to live our lives.”

The claim is false. The CSPC directed Check Your Fact to a statement made on behalf of the organization’s chair clarifying the exact position of the agency and the status of the alleged ban.

“Research indicates that emissions from gas stoves can be hazardous, and the CPSC is looking for ways to reduce related indoor air quality hazards,” the statement reads in part. “But to be clear, I am not looking to ban gas stoves and the CPSC has no proceeding to do so.” (RELATED: Did The Biden Administration Approve A New Healthcare Card?)

“The President does not support banning gas stoves—and the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which is independent, is not banning gas stoves,” a White House spokesperson confirmed in an email to Check Your Fact. The spokesperson added that  Trumka, who initially suggested a ban, said, “CPSC isn’t coming for anyone’s gas stoves.”

A letter was sent to CPSC chairman Alex Hoehn-Saric Dec. 21 by multiple lawmakers concerned about “indoor air pollution generated by gas stoves” and asking for action. It is unclear however, if the letter prompted any discussion or actions from the agency on the use of gas stoves.
