FACT CHECK: Does This Video Show NATO Tanks Destroying A Russian Ship?

A video shared on Facebook claims to show North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) tanks destroying a Russian ship.

Verdict: False

The video does not show genuine footage of a Russian ship being destroyed by NATO tanks. It is from a video game simulator.

Fact Check:

NATO countries, such as Germany, Poland and the U.S., have pledged 320 tanks to Ukraine, according to Reuters. That includes western-made main battle tanks such as the German Leopard II and the U.S made M1 Abrams, along with Soviet-era tanks such as T-72s, the outlet reported.

The Facebook video, viewed more than 41,000 times, claims to show NATO tanks engaging a Russian ship. The video’s caption reads, “the ship carrying Russian troop weaponry, was blown up by 4 of the strongest NATO TANK.”

However, this claim is false. The Facebook video shows footage from ARMA 3, a simulation-based video game published by Bohemia Interactive. Through a reverse image search, Check Your Fact found the video was posted to YouTube Dec. 22 with the same title.

“This video was created using U.S. Bohemia Interactive content,” reads part of the description. The video’s description also has hashtags such as #milsim and #Arma3, which indicate that the video shows footage from the game. Social media users have previously shared footage from ARMA 3, claiming it shows combat footage from the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. Check Your Fact has previously debunked such claims, most recently fact-checking a video claiming to show Russian forces being ambushed by Ukrainian troops.
