An image shared on Facebook claims to show a public demonstration in Zaman Park, Lahore, Pakistan in March 2023.

Verdict: False

The image shows a student-led protest calling for stricter gun control in March 2018 in Washington, D.C. The photo is not related to the current Pakistan protests.

Fact Check:

Pakistani police attempted to arrest Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mar. 15 after he failed to appear before a high court on corruption charges, according to CNN. Khan is accused of accepting gifts from foreign dignitaries while he was Prime Minister from 2018-2022. Violent clashes broke out around the home of Khan between his supporters and police near Zamam Park in Lahore, as reported by Reuters.

The Facebook post claims to show a large public demonstration in Lahore, Pakistan in response to the failed arrest of Khan. “Lahore: Fresh scenes from Zaman Park” reads the Urdu language post.

The claim is false. Using reverse image technology, the photo was actually taken in Washington, D.C. during the March for Our Lives Rally on March 24, 2018. The Getty Images caption reads, “Crowds and celebrities attend the March for Our Lives Rally on March 24, 2018 in Washington, DC.”

According to The New York Times, the March for Our Lives Rally was a student-led protest that advocated for stricter gun control laws. The protest gained wide public attention after a school shooting in Parkland, FL that left 17 people killed in Feb. 2018. (RELATED: Is Twitter Restricting Display Of The Ukrainian Flag?)

This is not the first time Pakistan has been the subject of misinformation on social media. Check Your Fact previously debunked a photo from July 2022 allegedly showing Russian President Vladimir Putin watching Kahn’s victory during Pakistan’s 2022 elections.
