A post shared on Twitter purports its CEO Elon Musk tweeted that he was closing the social media platform.

Verdict: False

There is no evidence Musk tweeted the purported remark. The social media user who published the tweet indicated it was not real.

Fact Check:

Musk tweeted Apr. 25 that verified accounts are now “prioritized,” but did not elaborate on exactly what he meant, according to Mashable. Musk could make almost $100,000 via direct Twitter Subscriptions, Insider reported.

The post appears to show Musk expressing disdain for the platform. “Ahh f-ck it, I’m closing this site, f-ck you and f-ck Twitter, I can never post a single g-ddamn thread in here without you tweeters making tweets in some way or another,” the purported tweet from Musk, viewed over 100,000 times, reads in part.

The claim is false. Check Your Fact found no credible news reports indicating Musk tweeted the purported remark. Likewise, an advanced Twitter search also does not generate the supposed tweet via Musk’s verified account. In addition, a review of PolitiTweet’s deleted tweet tracker does not reveal the purported tweet from Musk.

The purported tweet attributed to Musk appears to be satirical. The social media user who posted the tweet indicated it was not real in response to a comment from another social media user. (RELATED: Did Elon Musk Increase The Price Of Twitter Blue Verification To $15 Per Month)

The purported tweet attributed to Musk began circulating online just a few days after the Twitter CEO announced that Apr. 20 was the “final date for removing legacy Blue checks.”

Twitter began removing blue check marks from users who were not subscribed to Twitter Blue the same day, according to CNN. Although Musk’s plan was to have Twitter users pay $8 a month to keep their verification status via Twitter Blue, he has revived blue check marks for some celebrity legacy accounts, ABC News reported.

Check Your Fact has contacted Musk for comment and will update this piece accordingly if one is received.
