An image shared on Twitter claims to show anti-Trump signs as former President Donald Trump visits Scotland.

Verdict: False

The image is from 2016, not 2023.

Fact Check:

Trump visited Scotland to open a new gold course at his resort, according to The Associated Press. Trump is expected to go to his golf course in Ireland afterward, the outlet reported.

The Twitter image shows a woman carrying a sign that reads “Trump is a cunt” and claims the image is recent. The tweet reads, “Trump landed in Scotland today expecting a hero’s welcome. Here’s what the Scottish people REALLY think of him.”

However, this image is years old. Through a reverse image search, Check Your Fact found that the image is from 2016 and shows Scottish comedian Janey Godley. Godley wrote on her website that she went to see Trump, who was visiting Scotland after the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union. “So I felt like shit and was full of anger and I caught a bus to Turnberry Golf course just to welcome Mr Trump who flew in from US. I got out of the bus and stood proudly with my sign ‘TRUMP IS A CUNT’ the cops saw my sign and harassed me into folding it up,” Godley wrote.

While the image did not receive much media attention in 2016, it was mentioned in articles in the following years, such as a 2018 Guardian article, a 2021 Newsweek article and a 2021 Raw Story article.

She posed with a sign that had “Trump is a cunt’ written on it while in Belfast in May 2023, according to her Twitter account. The new image was reported on by the Daily Record, a Scottish tabloid.
