An image shared on social media purports that Canada has released new passports featuring pride flags.

Verdict: False

The caption is inaccurate. There is no evidence that the passports are related to the pride flag.

Fact Check:

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill earlier this month that would ban gender-affirming care for minors in the state, The Associated Press reported. The bill is largely anti-LGBTQ and was signed at an evangelical school in Tampa.

The Twitter post claims that Canada’s new passports no longer feature famous Canadian runner Terry Fox and an homage to The Battle of Vimy Ridge and now feature pride flags. The passport shared in the tweet also includes a deer on snow, leaves and a snowflake.

“These new Canadian Passports are an absolute DISGRACE,” the caption reads. “They removed Terry Fox and Vimy Ridge for a f*cking PRIDE FLAG?? Are you kidding me?”

The caption is inaccurate. There is no credible news report that suggests the new passports have pride flags on them. According to a government press release, the 4 colors on the passport are to represent the four seasons. There was no mention of their relation to the pride flag. Service Canada released a video that reveals the new designs and describes the new passport as “artwork that highlights Canada’s diverse landscapes and people throughout the four seasons.”

Furthermore, the Canadian government has updated security technology in the new design. The pages are designed so the seasonal artwork will change when seen under ultraviolet light.” (RELATED: Image Claims To Show Explosion AT Pentagon)

This is not the first time that a video or image was shared online with a false or misleading caption. Check Your Fact recently debunked a claim illegal immigration is down 90% since President Joe Biden took office.
