A viral video shared on X, formerly Twitter, purports to show U.K. police officers flashing the peace sign to pro-Palestine protestors during a recent demonstration.

Verdict: False

A close look at the officers’ vests reveal they are peace officers, not police officers. A video posted to the “Peace Officers U.K.” Facebook page indicates the peace officers have previously been sentenced for impersonating police officers. A spokesperson for the London Metropolitan Police also confirmed the men in the video were not police officers, according to Lead Stories.

Fact Check:

Former New Jersey Republican Gov. Chris Christie promised to share the devastation he saw during a recent trip to Israel amid the country’s current conflict with Hamas, according to CNN. Christie, who is also a 2024 presidential hopeful, said a cease-fire would not “make sense,” North Jersey.com reported.

The X video, viewed over 60,000 times, purports to show U.K. police officers flashing the peace sign to pro-Palestine protestors during a recent demonstration. “No it can’t be, can it!!!,” the post’s caption reads.

The video does not show police officers, however. A closer look at the officers’ vests reveal the word “PEACE” appears on the back of them. A keyword search using the term “peace officers U.K.” generates a Facebook page for the group. An image posted to the “Peace Officers U.K.” page shows a man wearing a yellow reflective vest similar to those in the viral X video.

Likewise, an April 2022 video posted to the Facebook group indicates the peace officers appealed a sentence and conviction for impersonating a police officer with the intent to deceive. (RELATED: Video Claims To Show Hamas Forcibly Conscripting A Man To Fight Israel)

In addition, Check Your Fact did not find the viral X video referenced in any credible news reports about protests related to the current Israel-Hamas conflict.

The video purporting to show U.K. police officers flashing the peace sign to pro-Palestine protestors during a recent demonstration originally stems from TikTok.

A spokesperson for the London Metropolitan Police confirmed the men who appeared in the video were not police officers, according to Lead Stories.

“The people showing peace signs aren’t officers. It’s some sort of internet stunt I think, but they’re not our officers,” the spokesperson explained to the outlet.

Check Your Fact has also contacted the London Metropolitan Police for comment and will update this piece accordingly if one is received.
