FACT CHECK: Did The President Of Ireland Expel The Israeli Ambassador?

A viral video shared on X, formerly Twitter, purports the Irish President expelled the Israeli ambassador and decided to file a lawsuit against the country in the international courts.

Verdict: False

The video shows Mary Lou McDonald, the leader of Ireland’s Sinn Fein opposition party, calling for the expulsion of the ambassador. Michael D. Higgins is the current president of Ireland and has not issued such an order.

Fact Check:

The Irish Parliament recently rejected a motion calling for the expulsion of Dana Erlich, Israel’s ambassador to Ireland, according to BBC News. A motion from the Sinn Fein opposition party to refer Israel to the International Criminal Court was also rejected, the outlet reported.

The X video, viewed over 11,000 times, purports the Irish President expelled the Israeli ambassador and decided to file a lawsuit against the country in the international courts. The video shows a woman it claims is the Irish President, stating that Israel has committed atrocities against mothers and their children in Gaza and must face the consequences of their actions as a result.

The video does not show the Irish President, however. Using keyframe analysis, Check Your Fact located the original iteration of the video shared on TikTok by Al Araby TV News. A translation of the video’s caption reveals the woman speaking is McDonald, the leader of Ireland’s Sinn Fein opposition party.

“The head of the Irish opposition Sinn Féin party calls on the government to expel the Israeli ambassador and refer Israel to the International Criminal Court #Ireland,” the translation reads.

Likewise, a keyword search reveals Michael D. Higgins is the current president of Ireland. According to the Irish President’s website, he was elected in November 2011. Higgins has not released a public statement declaring his intention to expel the Israeli ambassador or file a lawsuit against the country in the International Criminal Court.

In addition, Check Your Fact found no credible news reports supporting the claim. (RELATED: Did The Washington Post Publish An Article About Weapons Going From Ukraine To Hamas?)

The Sinn Fein opposition party recently shared a video of McDonald’s speech featuring her remarks about Israel to its X account.

Check Your Fact has contacted the Sinn Fein opposition party for comment and will update this piece accordingly if one is received.
