A post shared on Facebook claims the British landmark Big Ben was purportedly set on fire as a result of a recent protest.

Verdict: False

There is no evidence to support the claim. An image featured in the Facebook post that appears to show Big Ben on fire originally stems from a now-deleted TikTok video, according to Reuters.

Fact Check:

The U.K. is considering recognizing Palestine as a state, according to Foreign Secretary Lord David Cameron, BBC News reported. Cameron said the effort would be “difficult but not impossible,” the outlet reported.

“Big Ben torched by protest no media coverage,” the Facebook post’s caption purports. The post includes an image that appears to show Big Ben on fire. A watermark included on the image indicates it originally stems from the TikTok account @lumiversehq.

The claim is false. Check Your Fact reviewed the @lumiversehq TikTok account and did not find a video matching the image that appears in the Facebook post. The TikTok profile does feature a different video of Big Ben with green smoke billowing around the British landmark, however. In addition, neither of the two videos can be found via the same social media user’s YouTube channel.

Likewise, there are no credible news reports indicating Big Ben was purportedly set on fire as a result of a recent protest. In fact, the opposite is true. Reuters published an article labeling the claim as false on Jan. 30. In their article, the outlet noted the image of Big Ben that appeared in the Facebook post originally stems from a now-deleted TikTok video.

Additionally, an online web camera shows the British landmark has not recently been set on fire. Furthermore, the London Metropolitan Police Department has not publicly released a statement commenting on the claim. (RELATED: Did A British General Die In Gaza?)

Check Your Fact has contacted the London Metropolitan Police Department for comment and will update this piece accordingly if one is received.
