FACT CHECK: Facebook Post Makes False Claim About Russia Supplying Weapons To Texas
A post shared on Facebook claims Russia is purportedly going to supply weapons to Texas amid the state’s ongoing dispute with the federal government over the Southern Border.
Verdict: False
There is no evidence supporting the claim. Lead Stories also debunked the claim as false in a Feb. 6 piece.
Fact Check:
More than 12 Republican governors, including Texas Governor Greg Abbott, visited the Southern Border at Eagle Pass Sunday, according to The Associated Press. Twenty-five Republican governors initially backed Abbott amid the standoff between his state and the federal government, BBC News reported.
“Russia To Supply Weapons To Texas If Needed To Fight Biden Border Heist Nation,” the Facebook post purports, citing a Jan. 27 episode of the Hal Turner Radio Show as the source of the claim.
The claim is false, however. A Jan. 27 article published on the Hal Turner Radio Show’s website quotes Vasily Nebenzya, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), as having said Russia will supply Texas with weapons. “It is important to understand that by supplying weapons to Texas, Russia does not become a party to the conflict,” Nebenzya allegedly said, according to the article.
The same article includes a photo of Nebenzya, which also appears in a September 2023 piece published on the Russian-language website, “Delfi.” The caption indicates the image shows Nebenzya speaking at a UN Security Council meeting in February 2023.
Check Your Fact reviewed the UN’s website as well as its verified social media accounts and did not find any evidence Nebenzya made the purported remark. There are also no credible news reports supporting the claim. In fact, the opposite is true. Lead Stories debunked the claim as false in a Feb. 6 piece. The outlet noted that Nebenzya’s purported remark did not appear in a transcript of the UN Security Council’s February 2023 meeting. However, the link to the transcript now appears to be dead. The federal government and the state of Texas remain in an ongoing dispute over the Southern Border after Texas took control of Shelby Park a month ago, according to NBC News. The Texas National Guard patrols the area and has installed razor wire to keep both migrants and Border Patrol agents from entering, the outlet reported.
Check Your Fact has contacted the UN for comment and will update this piece accordingly if one is received.
