FACT CHECK: No, Democrats Are Not Trying To Make The American Flag ‘More Inclusive’

An image shared on Facebook claims Democrats are calling for the American flag to be redesigned to make it “more inclusive.”

Verdict: False

There is no evidence to support the claim. The image featured in the Facebook post originally stems from Getty Images and shows protestors holding a pro-gay rights flag outside the U.S. Supreme Court in 2015.

Fact Check:

Democratic hopefuls for the U.S. Senate in Arizona, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin are currently ahead of their Republican challengers and President Joe Biden in recent polls, according to The New York Times. In Pennsylvania, for example, Sen. Bob Casey has a five-point lead of 46% over his Republican opponent David McCormick at 41%, the outlet reported.

“BREAKING: Democrats are calling to redesign the American Flag to make it more inclusive. What’s your reaction?” the Facebook image’s caption reads. The image features a group of protestors holding a large American flag with white and pink stars and rainbow stripes. The post does not provide a source to support its claim.

The claim is false, however. The image featured in the Facebook post originally stems from Getty Images and shows protestors holding a pro-gay rights flag outside the U.S. Supreme Court in 2015.

“Protesters hold a pro-gay rights flag outside the US Supreme Court on April 25, 2015, countering the demonstrators who attended the March For Marriage in Washington, DC. The Supreme Court meets on April 28 to hear arguments whether same-sex couples have a constitutional right to wed in the United States, with a final decision expected in June,” the image’s caption reads. Likewise, Check Your Fact found no credible news reports to support the claim. In fact, the opposite is true. USA Today also debunked the claim via a May 7 article. Furthermore, the Democratic Party has not publicly mentioned any plans to redesign the American flag to make it more “inclusive” via its website or verified social media accounts.

This is not the first time a false claim has circulated online. Check Your Fact previously debunked a video shared on X that claimed to show a robbery gone bad in Brazil.
