A video shared on X claims to show the Iranian president Ibrahim Raisi before he died.

Verdict: False

The video was posted in January 2024 by Iranian state media. It is not related to the recent helicopter crash.

Fact Check:

The Iranian president and foreign minister died in a helicopter crash, according to The Associated Press. Elections for his replacement are due to take place next month, the outlet reported.

Social media users are showing a video of Raisi in a helicopter, claiming it shows him onboard right before the helicopter crashed.

“Video footage shows Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi on board the helicopter shortly before it made a hard landing in mountainous terrain due to foggy conditions in East Azerbaijan province,” one user wrote.

This claim is false. Through a reverse image search, Check Your Fact found that the video is from January 2024 and shows Raisi visiting the Nemroud Dam. It was posted on X by the Islamic Republic News Agency, an Iranian state-run media organization.

“This morning, the President’s aerial visit to the Nemroud Dam in Firouzkoh city,” reads the tweet. The visit was also reported on by other Iranian outlets. (RELATED: Video Claims To Show US Destroyer Hit By Houthi Missile)

NewsMeter also debunked this claim.
