Verdict: Misleading
The claim is misleading. While the video shows police and pro-Palestinian protesters clashing in London, it is not a recent clip.
Fact Check:
The parents of Alice da Silva Aguiar, one of the children killed in the Southport stabbing, have called for an end to the riots in the U.K., according to Reuters. The child’s parents relayed the message at her funeral through Merseyside Chief Constable Serena Kennedy, the outlet reported.
The X video, viewed over 300 times as of writing, claims to show a recent clash between police and pro-Palestinian protesters in London. “The Police have to Riot Gear On [sic] As Object [sic] Are Thrown At Them,” the video’s caption reads in part. The caption also claims 10 arrests were made as a result of the protest. The post appears to refer to recent protests occurring in the U.K. following a July 29 stabbing in Southport.
The claim is misleading. While the video shows police and pro-Palestinian protesters clashing in London, it is not a recent clip. The clip, which was originally shared on YouTube, shows a pro-Palestinian protest that took place in London on October 21, 2023.
“An estimated 150,000 pro-Palestinians marched on Central London today (Oct 21). The Met Police stated 10 people were arrested, some during scuffles at Trafalgar Square, later in the evening, following the conclusion of the rally. The Met also stated that five officers were injured during the protest,” the video’s description reads.
Likewise, Check Your Fact did not find the X video referenced in any credible news reports about the recent protests occurring in the U.K. Actually, the opposite is true. On August 12, Misbar reported the claim was misleading, also tracing the original clip back to YouTube.
In addition, Check Your Fact did not find the clip referenced on the London Metropolitan Police Department’s website or its verified social media accounts. (RELATED: Did London Police Arrest A Young Girl In Connection With The Recent U.K. Riots?)
Protests have been occurring in the U.K. following the claim that a 17-year-old who allegedly stabbed and killed three young children in Southport was a Muslim migrant, according to BBC News and the Guardian respectively.
Check Your Fact contacted the London Metropolitan Police Department about the X video, but they declined to comment.
